That last one is the tell. Most people assume their symptoms come from being outside, pollen, cut grass, whatever's blooming that month. So they treat it as a seasonal problem and wait it out.
If it's worse at home than at work, and worse in winter when the house is sealed up and the same air is circulating for months, the source is indoors. That's also why it rarely gets identified: the outdoor explanation is available all year round in Pennsylvania, and it's always half-plausible.
The other clue is timing. If it eases within an hour of leaving the house and returns the same evening, you're not reacting to the neighbourhood.
Why Pennsylvania Homes Struggle With This
If you or anyone in your home deals with allergies, asthma, or just constantly dusty surfaces, your indoor air is the likely culprit. Pennsylvania humidity makes it worse by giving mold and dust mites the conditions they need, and a lot of local homes sit in that range for most of the summer.
The seasons stack up too. Tree pollen in spring, grass through early summer, ragweed in August, and leaf mold through the fall. Every one of those gets into the house on clothes, through open windows, and through gaps in the building envelope.
Then the housing stock cuts both ways. Older homes around here leak: air moves through gaps you can't see, dragging dust and humidity with it. Newer construction has the opposite problem: sealed tight for efficiency, with nowhere for stale air, cooking moisture, and off-gassing from furnishings to go. Both end up with poor air, for opposite reasons, and they need different fixes.

Which Air Quality Solution Fits Your Problem
Most companies sell "air quality" as a single package, a bundle of equipment at one price, on the reasonable assumption that something in there will help. It usually does. It also means paying for two or three things your house didn't need.
At Dilling we'd rather work out which of these you're actually dealing with first, because these four solve genuinely different problems and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake we see. A UV light won't do anything about dust. The best filter on the market won't fix a damp basement. If one piece of equipment sorts it, that's what we'll recommend.

Air Quality Questions We Get a Lot
The clearest sign is symptoms that ease when you leave the house and return when you come back. Dust reappearing within a day or two of cleaning, a musty smell in humid weather, or rooms that feel stuffy regardless of temperature all point the same direction. The assessment measures it rather than leaving you to guess.
It helps, but there's a trade-off most people don't know about. A dense 1" filter captures more and also restricts airflow, which makes the whole system work harder and can cost you cooling capacity. A 4–5" media filter has far more surface area, so it captures more without that penalty, and it needs changing once or twice a year rather than monthly.
It's installed inside the air handler and runs continuously on the evaporator coil and drain pan. Those stay dark and damp year-round, which is why they're where biological growth establishes. The lamp's output degrades over time even though it still lights up, so it gets replaced roughly annually.
Roughly 30–50%. Above 60%, mold and dust mites have the conditions they need to establish. Below 30% in winter you get static, cracked woodwork, and air that feels colder than the thermostat says. Most Pennsylvania homes run too humid in summer and too dry in winter, which is why humidity control often means both directions.
Dander is a particle, so media filtration handles it. A deep filter captures far more of it than a standard 1" filter. Odour is different: it's gas, not particles, so a filter alone won't remove it. Carbon filtration or better ventilation is usually the answer there, and Dilling will tell you which one you're dealing with.
It depends entirely on which of the four you need, and most homes need one or two rather than all of them.
